Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar Disorder
Adolescents with bipolar disorder experience extreme mood swings, alternating between depressive, mellow episodes and manic or hypomanic states, where a person is high energy, or “hyper”.
Common symptoms include:
- Mood Swings: Adolescents may experience dramatic shifts in mood, ranging from periods of extreme euphoria or irritability (manic episodes) to prolonged feelings of sadness or hopelessness (depressive episodes).
- Increased Energy and Activity: During manic episodes, they may exhibit increased energy levels, engage in impulsive behaviours, and require less sleep.
- Fatigue and Loss of Interest: Depressive episodes can lead to fatigue, loss of interest in activities, and changes in sleep and appetite.
- Difficulty in School or Social Settings: Bipolar disorder can affect academic performance and social interactions due to the fluctuating mood states.
Interventions at Marga include:
- Mood Stabilizers and Medication Management: Medication, such as mood stabilisers, can help regulate mood swings and manage bipolar symptoms effectively.
- Psychoeducation and Self-Management: Educating adolescents about bipolar disorder and teaching them self-management skills empowers them to recognize triggers, cope with mood changes, and adhere to treatment plans.
- Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: CBT helps adolescents identify and challenge negative thought patterns during depressive episodes and develop coping strategies during manic episodes.
- Family Therapy and Support: Involving the family in therapy fosters a supportive environment and helps them understand and provide support during mood fluctuations.
